US ambassador: We do not support specific party in Iraqi elections


The United States Ambassador to Iraq said his country is not supporting individuals or parties in the upcoming election, asserting that the US is neutral towards all political players.

“The United States does not support a candidate or a political party,” Douglas Silliman said during a TV interview on Alfurat channel, when asked “does US support PM Haidar al-Abadi for another term?” Silliman called on Iraqi people to take part in the upcoming election on May 12, to deepen the democracy in their state.

The ambassador stressed this his country’s role in the election is consulting the Independent High Electoral Commission, and limited to observe and help the NGOs to do so.
